"Hmm, what should I do?"
"Colonel Reardon, is anything the matter?"
"No, not until I ordered one company to investigate, but entering the forest in the evening? What was Second Lieutenant Scott thinking? Normally, we would encamp in front of the forest and enter the forest early in the morning, right? A night battle in the forest after sunset is like walking towards your death. Bring me his combat record."
"Yes!"
"It's all goblins… the other day against the orcs it was a different squadron. Did he think trolls were just huge goblins? Good grief."
"I'm sorry, sir. It was my fault for issuing the sortie order to him."
"No, it was because he was available, wasn't it? Rather, the problem is whoever promoted him to Second Lieutenant. Well, that being said, go and call up some of the soldiers who were unharmed in this battle, and interview them."
At Colonel Leadon's words, the Adjutant said — "Yes, immediately." And then left.
Testimony 1:
The Second Lieutenant said, "Don't be afraid of the likes of trolls. A single platoon was enough to eliminate it. This is a full company, and we even have a ballista, so there's no way we can fail!"
Testimony 2:
When asked, "Are you sure about a night battle in the forest?" – "They're large and fat, slow bastards! If we run, we'll be faster! Moreover, it's enormous, so it's a good target for the ballista, right? It's all-you-can-hit!" – He laughed…"
Colonel Reardon held his head as he listened.
A thin, lanky man in a sparkling military uniform, with long golden hair and green eyes. A man whose face seemed to exude an arrogant personality, Second Lieutenant Scott was in a good mood as he headed towards the summons from Colonel.
After all, he had eliminated two trolls. There were a few injuries, but that was how battles were fought.
"I might be promoted to First Lieutenant."
He lifted the edge of his mouth and let out a small whisper.
"Second Lieutenant Scott Pagenaud! What the bloody hell have you been learning?"
This was the first thing Colonel Reardon said.
Second Lieutenant Scott had no idea what he was talking about.
"No matter how, didn't we defeat the enemy?"
He asked in return.
"You idiot! How can you say such a thing with impunity after causing three deaths among the fifteen injured!"
The three who were seriously injured did not survive.
When he was yelled at, Second Lieutenant Scott became annoyed and retorted.
"Injuries and deaths are inevitable in a battle with monsters! The important point is to defeat the enemy as quickly as possible!"
"Is it a battle to just charge in without a plan? Don't be ridiculous! That's called suicide!"
"That was just the inexperience of those who died in the battle, I bear no responsibility! The other injured soldiers were idiots who even fell while running! They didn't have enough training!"
"It is common knowledge that if you fight in the forest at night, you'll slip on stones and branches! That's why you should have been taught not to fight at night in the forest!"
"I haven't fallen, sir? I've been training hard!"
"That's just a coincidence!"
"No, I didn't fall and I didn't die."
"Don't talk back! That's enough! Get out!"
"Sigh, so who promoted that idiot to Second Lieutenant?"
"Yes, Major General Jonathan Newgarden. Apparently, he's a relative of the Major General."
"That pig of Major General? I knew my face would be irritated."
"What are you going to do?"
"Contact Lieutenant General Penske and have him seize Newgarden. If we keep using that idiot, we'll run out of soldiers! That idiot will be demoted to sergeant!"
"Damn it! What the hell was with that Colonel!? He hasn't seen me work, yet he acts so high and mighty! I don't care how many of my trash subordinates die or get hurt! They're just a bunch of commoner scum anyway, so even if their numbers were to decrease, they would immediately bounce back, so what's wrong with the nobles making the most out of them?! I'm the future Major General, no, the future Captain General! You're just a Colonel! Just wait and see. If I ask my uncle, he'll demote that guy immediately!"
The next day.
"Master Sergeant Patrick Rigsby is hereby promoted to Second Lieutenant. With an award of five gold coins."
"Sergeant Wayne Kimble is hereby promoted to Master Sergeant. With an award of three gold coins."
"Second Lieutenant Scott Pagenaud is hereby demoted to Sergeant."
A letter of resignation was delivered.
